Dental Exam
Grants Pass, OR

Smiling woman in dental chair looking up at dental assistant. When you think of the word exam, a difficult test might come to mind, but a dental exam is far easier than that! In fact, alongside regular professional cleanings, routine exams are a fundamental part of preventive dentistry. At The Center for Esthetic Dentistry, you will receive fast, thorough exams so you can be assured that your teeth are as healthy as they can possibly be.

Do You Need a Dental Exam?

This is something of a trick question - everyone can benefit from a dental exam! Even if you brush and floss daily like the American Dental Association urges, it is still important to have a trained dental professional take a look at your teeth at least once every six months. Coming in just twice a year for a few minutes each time is enough to ensure that most people will have strong, healthy teeth. By checking for buildups of plaque and tartar every six months, we can eliminate them before they grow big enough to start causing decay, cavities, and infections. If you fall behind on coming in every six months, it may be necessary to ask you to come in more frequently if we have spotted signs of gum or tooth disease. By closely monitoring the health of your mouth we can make sure the disease retreats, otherwise it can advance and cause far more serious risks.

How to Prepare for an Exam

Exams are typically straightforward, so you should not have to do much. If it is your first time visiting our office, then you will want to double-check ahead of time that all of your dental history and any x-rays and other scans have already been transferred over to us so that we can review the information together. Other than that, all you need to do to prepare for an exam is the same thing you should already be doing - brushing and flossing every single day. Flossing is easy to neglect, but it is an important part of maintaining good oral hygiene. By not flossing daily, you can let dangerous amounts of bacteria build-up between your death, bacteria that will eventually burrow into your gums.

What to Expect During a Dental Exam

If you have ever been to the dentist, then you probably have a pretty good idea of what to expect during an exam. Exams are usually fairly short, and should not require administering any medications. During an exam, we will perform both visual and high-tech inspections of not just your teeth, but also your gums, tongue, jaw, and the rest of your mouth. Digital x-rays that emit practically zero radiation can image your teeth in a fraction of the time that conventional x-rays take, offering us ultra-high-resolution pictures that can reveal all manner of potentially risky oral health conditions.
