Taking Care of Your Teeth and Gums During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a wonderful time in the lives of women all over the world. There is so much anticipation and happiness when a pregnancy occurs, especially if you have been wanting to begin or add to your family. Now that you are pregnant, it is really important that you take care of yourself, from the hair on your head to the soles of your feet. That includes looking after your teeth and gums during pregnancy. Here are some guidelines you need to be mindful of while caring for your dental health.
Are There Changes in My Mouth During Pregnancy?
The body undergoes a massive amount of change during a nine-month pregnancy. Thicker hair, longer fingernails, an acute sense of smell, and heartburn are just a few of the changes. Your teeth and gums may undergo some changes during pregnancy as well.
First, many pregnant women experience bleeding or sore gums during pregnancy, even if they have never had gum issues before. You might notice that your gums look red, swollen, or bloody. Pregnancy gingivitis, or gum disease, can become a real problem during pregnancy.
Second, the nutritional needs of your growing baby are more important than yours, according to your body. That means that if you do not have enough vitamin D and calcium during pregnancy, your body will take it from your bones to give to the growing infant, which could mean you have weaker teeth. Pregnancy can leave both your teeth and gums less healthy than they were before you became pregnant.
Caring for Your Teeth and Gums
If you are pregnant, there are some things you can do to ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy. First, be sure you are taking all of your prenatal vitamins, which include additional vitamins to help your teeth and bones stay strong. Second, try to eat a balanced diet to keep your body as healthy as possible. Brush and floss at least twice a day to help your gums. You may want to switch to a gum care toothpaste to try to ward off gum disease.
