What Is Poor Oral Hygiene?

Maintaining good oral hygiene practices is essential to prevent these issues and ensure a healthy smile. If you notice telltale signs of dental complications, schedule a consultation with your dentist to address the problem before things get out of hand.

Bleeding or Swollen Gums

The most obvious sign of poor oral hygiene is bleeding or swollen gums. Healthy gums have a pale pink color, and they do not bleed when you brush or floss. However, when you neglect your oral hygiene routine, plaque and bacteria can accumulate along the gum line, causing gingivitis. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to a more severe stage of gum disease, periodontitis, which may cause gum recession and tooth loss.

Alterations to the Tongue Texture and Color

The tongue can show signs of poor oral hygiene. A healthy tongue should have a smooth texture and a consistent pinkish color. However, improper oral care can cause changes in tongue appearance. If you notice a coated or discolored tongue, it may show oral bacteria or fungi. In some cases, it can be a sign of dehydration or other underlying health issues. Visit your dentist to identify the cause of these changes and viable solutions.

Growths Within the Mouth

Poor oral hygiene can cause the development of various growths within the mouth. These growths are usually painful ulcers, white or red patches, or even abnormal lumps and bumps on the lips, cheeks, or the roof of the mouth. Some of these growths are benign, such as canker sores or cold sores, but others are major causes of concern, such as oral cancer. Any recurring mouth growth or soreness prompts a professional evaluation by a dental professional to mitigate severe damage.

Maintaining good oral hygiene is vital to prevent the signs and symptoms associated with poor oral health. If you notice any of the mentioned signs, consult our dental experts for an in-depth assessment and proper treatment to protect your oral and overall health.
